Abstract

The aim of the article is to discuss the perceptions surrounding translation and translators. Also, relying on the results of a study, it aims to investigate which competencies and skills young non-translators (high school and university students) consider most important for translators nowadays, and how they perceive changes in the translator’s image in the context of the widespread use of machine translation and artificial intelligence. The data was collected through a survey conducted via Google Forms. A total of 191 non-translators (139 gymnasium and 52 university students) participated in the survey. The responses were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

The findings generally support the conclusions of previous studies, which indicate that perceptions regarding translators and translation remain relatively unchanged, even in the context of artificial intelligence and machine translation use. However, variations in the responses reveal that high school and university students perceive the translator’s work differently – university students exhibit a slightly deeper understanding of the translation process and the professional nuances of the field.

 

Artikli eesmärk on arutleda tõlkimist ja tõlkijat ümbritsevate arusaamade üle ja leida läbiviidud uurimuse põhjal vastused küsimustele, mil­liseid pädevusi ja oskusi peavad mittetõlkijad noored (gümnasistid ja tudengid) tänapäeva tõlkija jaoks kõige olulisemaks ning kuidas tajuvad nad muutusi tõlkija kuvandis seoses masintõlke ja tehisaru laialdase levikuga kasutajate seas. Andme­kogumise meetodina kasutati küsitlust, mis viidi läbi Google Formsi keskkon­nas. Küsitlusele vastas 191 mittetõlkijat, kellel paluti väljendada oma hoiakuid tõlkimise ja tõlkepädevuste kohta. Vastuste analüüsiks kasutati kvalitatiivset sisuanalüüsi. Tulemused toetavad üldiselt varasemate uurimuste järeldusi, mille kohaselt püsivad tõlkijat ja tõlkimist puudutavad arusaamad üsna muutumatuna, seda ka tehisaru ja masintõlke kasutamise kontekstis. Samas viitavad uurimuse tulemused, et gümnasistid ja tudengid tajuvad tõlkija ametit veidi erinevalt – tudengite puhul ilmneb pisut sügavam arusaam nii tõlkeprotsessist kui ka tõlkija töö erialastest nüanssidest.
