The article compares ten Erzya-Mordvin translations of the Lord’s Prayer from the point of view of lexical innovation. It is of particular interest what kind of new words and expressions the translators created, and to what extent they made use of the Russian lexicon. The Lord’s Prayer was first translated into Erzya at the end of the 18th century (Молитва Отче нашъ на мордовском языкѣ). The 19th century saw six further versions (two as parts of the Gospels according to Mark and Luke in 1821, and the four others in 1870, 1882, 1889 and 1894). Then, a century later, after the fall of the Soviet Union, three new translations were written in 1993, 1996 and 2006. On the whole, it can be said that in the early texts translators sought Mordvinisation, while the late 19th century versions contain a great number of Russianisms, and the latest translations show a revived dominance of linguistic purism.
