Abstract
The river name Kuva was originally a compound, consisting of an extinct Komi word *ku(d) ’house, hut’ and the term va ’water, river’, which is widespread in East-European place names. The name of the town of Kudymkar has three components: *ku(d) ’house, hut’, the Permian toponymic term ym ’mouth (of a river)’, and the Komi word kar ’town’.
