Abstract

The paper deals with the analysis of ways of conveying realia in translations of Finnish prose into Komi. Realia are lexical units to be translated, which denote objects, concepts, or situations that may not exist in the practical experience of speaker of the language of translation. Being carriers of national flavor and having no dictionary correspondences in other languages, realia require a special approach to translation. The research materials are a series of fairy tales based on Sami folklore and mythology by the Finnish writer Leena Laulajainen ”The Sun Bird and the Raven of the polar night” (”Aurinkolintu ja kaamoksen korppi”) and their translation into Komi by Sergei Gabov («Шондi лэбач да юрйыв вой кырныш»).
