Vilja Oja, A Geolinguistic Comparison of Some Finnic Lexical Issues
A b s t r a c t. The study is based on material collected for the Atlas Linguarum Fennicarum (ALFE), which is a joint project prepared by Finnish, Estonian and Karelian linguists. Several lexical issues, the areas of which tend to cross language borders, are discussed. The analysis reveals certain mutual relationships of languages and dialects. On the one hand, we can see the historical ties of South-Estonian dialects with the Eastern or Northern Finnic languages, as well as the contacts of Southeast-Finnish dialects with North-Estonian dialects. On the other hand, the contrasts between the Eastern and Western Finnic languages, as well as between the Northern and Southern Finnic languages are visualised.

Der Autor vermutet, dass der Name serjane (irgendein Südkomi-Stamm) unter dem Einfluss äußerer Umstände und aus dem russischen Verb zyrit' 'scharf schauen' zum russischen Ethnonym zyrjane 'Syrjänen' transformiert worden sein kann. Damit wurden einst die nach Sibirien ausgewanderten Komi bezeichnet. Später hat sich dieser Name als Bezeichnung für alle Komi durchgesetzt

Z u s a m m e n f a s s u n g. Um in der chantischen Sprache Optativität ausdrücken zu können, werden bevorzugt stilistisch neutrale Verben eingesetzt. So laŋhaty 'wollen, wünschen', aber auch phraseologische Ausdrücke kommen zum Einsatz, besonders dann, wenn es sich um so genannte physiologische Bedürfnisse (Traum, Hunger, Durst usw.) handelt.

E. V. Usenkova, Lexical and Syntactical Means of Expressing Modality in the Nganasan Language
A b s t r a c t. The aim of the article is to describe lexical and syntactical means of expressing modality in the Nganasan language. Lexical means comprise modal verbs, a group of words with emotive semantics, modal words, modal particles and interjections. Of interest here is also the problem of finding discriminating criteria for defining the above-mentioned means as parts of speech in the Nganasan language. The description of syntactical means includes syntactical constractions, nominal sentences, inverted word-order and direct address. But, first and foremost, the investigation was to shed light on the role both the lexical and the syntactical means play in expressing different types of modality.
