Abstract
The article focusses on various ethnolinguistic consequences of the new, postmodern world order and its implications on Finno-Ugric and Uralic languages in particular. Language shift that concerns most languages is analyzed through formal and informal functions. Hidden agendas behind factors of language shift (and consequent murder) are revealed and discussed. Various options of the new diglossic framework for traditional speech communities are presented. The analysis presents a gloomy view of the situation and future for Uralic languages, where the number of speakers among many smaller ones is currently decreasing rapidly, by 1/4—1⁄3 per generation. Several languages are moribund. Probably only for the languages that function as national languages of sovereign states sustainable development is guaranteed.
