Abstract
The results of the observations of upwellings and downwellings near the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland in the Pakri Bay region in 1995–1996 are presented. Long-term currents, temperature and salinity measurements at single points and repeated CTD-castings on the transects perpendicular to the coastline show that the average properties of the water masses across the Gulf of Finland may be substantially modified by sequences of upwellings and downwellings of different extent. In particular, fresher water patches in the middle of the Gulf of Finland apparently have been formed as a result of a sequence of upwellings in 1987 and 1990.
